Spirits of the Season

Mimosas, chocolates…some things are just better with a little pop of citrus. Whiskey is no different. And, what perfect time to make a lemony drink than when citrus is at its peak in the winter?

Brown liquor is always welcome in our home. We’ve made several trips to Kentucky to taste the creations along the famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail. After trying Clyde May’s, which was sent to us by The Baddish Group to test, we’re adding Alabama to our list of stops to make next.

If you’ll remember, we did a spiced and chilled apple cider spiked with Clyde May’s rye whiskey. It worked so well because the rye whiskey lends a bit of spice to counteract the sweetness of the apple cider. Well, the same is true here. You can easily switch between sweeter-tasting whiskey or rye whiskey.

Click here to watch my video on how to make a basic whiskey sour.

The Whiskey Sour will be a little sweeter with the regular whiskey than with the rye whiskey, but the real power player here is the lemon or lime (or other citrus) juice. That’s where the Whiskey Sour gets its “sour.”

You can have a ball with your garnishes here. We used citrus rounds, but thyme, a splash of bitters, or bourbon-soaked cherries are all fabulous here.

Here’s what you’ll need:

2 oz (or parts) Clyde May’s whiskey

1 oz (or part) lemon juice (or lime juice)

1 oz (or part) of sweet citrus juice (we used orange, but you can use grapefruit or mandarin, depending on the taste – and sweetness level – you’re after)

1 tsp fine sugar or simple syrup (you can add flavor in the syrup, too!)

Ice cubes

Garnish of your choice (we used a slice of lime and a slice of mandarin)

Here’s how to put it all together:

In a shaker, add the sugar or simple syrup, whiskey, and citrus juice. Give it a good few shakes to mix everything together.

Pour over ice and garnish. It’s best served in an Old Fashioned glass.

Cheers!

Special thanks to The Baddish Group for sending us a bottle of one of our now favorite whiskeys, Clyde May’s. It’s thanks to our wonderful sponsors and partners that we’re able to continue to produce fun and exciting content for y’all!
