Making Your House Guests Feel at Home

One of my favorite guest rooms we’ve stayed in at The Greenbrier.

Hosting friends and family is truly one of the greatest joys. There’s something about having rooms occupied that usually aren’t that makes your home come alive.

There are a few simple things you can do to make sure that your guests feel welcome and as “at home” as possible.

Make sure you have an extra blanket at the foot of the bed and extra pillows stowed in the closet where they can find them. These are some of the first things I look for whenever we check into a hotel, especially in the winter. It’s nice to have an extra blanket, quilt, or coverlet handy in case your guests get chilly in the evening. Spare pillows are also key as some may sleep with one, but others two or three.

Fresh flowers. Even one or two blooms in a bud vase can add a certain brightness and freshness to a room. It’s such a wonderful touch. I prefer hydrangea or pink roses.

Add a candle and a chic matchbook for a little extra coziness.

A water carafe on a nightstand is a lovely something extra you can do for your guests to save them an awkward trip downstairs to the kitchen in the middle of the night.

Make space in the closet or a drawer. Making room for your guests is important if your space provides it. If they are staying for a weekend, make sure that you remove personal items if you can. Add a few empty hangers in the closet and clean out a drawer or two if possible.

Set out the essentials. Make sure that your guest bathroom is stocked with extra shampoo, conditioner, a shower cap, and clean linens. Individually-sized bath wash, shampoo, and conditioner bottles from resorts are terrific as they are often high quality and you can simply toss them out after your guests leave and replace them easily.

Deep clean the room. This goes without saying, but you’ll want to give your guest room a proper cleaning before your guests arrive.

An extra pair of slippers and a robe are thoughtful items to leave out for your guests to use during their stay. I love robes by Matouk, like this one. Slippers that slide on will give you much more flexibility with sizing (love these for ladies).

Set out a few books or magazines that you think your guests might enjoy skimming.

A quick spritz or two of lightly scented (I love lavender) linen spray is also a nice touch.

It’s all about the details – and ruffles are always a good idea.
