I couldn’t be happier that fall is around the corner. It’s one of my favorite seasons and DC gets to enjoy a whopping two weeks’ worth of it, but for those two weeks, it’s just wonderful.

Since, as you all know, I’m very much a “list person,” I thought I’d share a few items that are on mine that I have successfully put off until now. With fall right around the corner, now’s as good a time as any to start checking these off.

Weatherize your boots. It’s a great time to go through your suede pumps and riding boots and take stock on what you need to have done for the months ahead. Adding heel caps, repairing scuffs, and weatherizing your shoes can easily be done – and better to get it taken care of ahead of time so that when you actually need them, you’re ready to go.

My cobbler recommends this spray for weatherizing shoes. Be sure and check out my post on all the things a good cobbler can do to fix, repair, and help your shoes live a long life. I also include my local recommendation in there. The team at Sam Torrey has been taking care of our shoes for years.

Have your Barbour reproofed. The Georgetown store currently has a 2-3-week processing time that will only go up. You should aim to get yours re-waxed once or twice a year, depending on how often you wear it. An associate at Orvis once told me that as soon as you begin to really like the color, it probably means the wax has worn off – ha!

Dry clean any pieces that are too summery. You read that right. I always, always start dry cleaning pieces that are at the end of their season rather than ones that are about to be back in season. That way, I know they’re going to be put away clean and ready when I pull them out again next spring or summer.

Naturally, assess your fall pieces and see if you missed any that might need dry cleaning or a little freshening up. We try to store ours in Tupperware bins and sometimes that scent stays on them. You can usually remedy this by laying them out for a day or two in a spare room.

Take inventory of your fall closet. Labor Day weekend sales are happening and it’s a great time to stock up on those basics you’ll need for the new season. I always try to pick these up throughout the year no matter what season we’re in, so spring and summer items for the next year are fair game.

Saint James and Kule are my two favorites when it comes to snagging essential striped tops. They layer beautifully underneath sweaters and my favorite sweater-blazers from J.Crew. Right, but I also promised you guys sales. Here are a few worth checking out:

J.Crew – extra 50% off sale items.

Brooks Brothers – sale items up to 50% off. I recently snagged this corduroy skirt for under $30 (sized down since it’s a fit-and-flare style) and this olive one for under $40 (also sized down).

Stubbs & Wootton – 30% off bespoke.

Julie Brown NYC – extra 30% off sale items.

Ralph Lauren – extra 30% off if you spend $150 or more. This includes markdowns on their bridge lines, Polo Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lauren Golf, etc.
