What to Wear and What to Bring

Over the years, we’ve gotten better and better when it comes to taking red eye flights. Call us crazy, but we’re the type of travelers who don’t like to sit still in one place. Making the most of every minute is our travel style, which often means taking a red eye or early morning travel.

Whether it’s to California and back or across the pond, we’ve learned that there are a few things you should always bring with you. With a little extra planning, you’ll be able to make it through the flight and to the other side!

Here are a few of our favorite tips:

Go to sleep earlier a few days ahead of your trip. We’ve been using the Timeshifter app and have loved it so far. Mornings have actually been smoother for us, believe it or not!

Wear comfy clothes. There’s nothing worse than trying to sleep in clothes that are restricting. You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort though. I picked up a pair of these pants from J. Crew in a silky olive color for our trip. They are available in stores, but I haven’t had luck finding them online. Here’s a similar pair. I usually wear a 6 in J. Crew pants (hello, hips), but sized down to a size 2 in these since they’re a bit bigger and wide-leg.

I’ll pair them with this popover top in ivory (runs large; I took an XS in it) tucked in and a black sweater-blazer (also runs large; I took an XS) over it. The best part – aside from this outfit being super comfortable – is that it takes up little to no space. I’ll also wear the pants and sweater-blazer again with another white top for our trip back.

Begin limiting your caffeine. This makes a huge difference. We stopped consuming caffeine after 2PM most days, then 1PM, then 12PM, and, finally, 10AM the day of our trip. This is actually something I might continue doing.

Pack the proper gear:

  • Eye mask (pro tip: practice sleeping in one leading up to your trip)
  • Socks, roll-able slippers, or compact flats to change into
  • Headphones and a phone ready with soothing music or white noise
  • Neck pillow that’s comfortable yet sturdy

Fly with a fresh face. Remove your makeup ahead of time (I love these makeup removing wipes) and layer on a deep moisturizing lotion and facial oil.

Drink plenty of water. I can’t stress this enough. It makes a big difference for your energy level and your skin. Pack a collapsible water bottle so you can refill it as you go.

Pack snacks. Stow a few of your favorite bars (we like RxBars) in your carry-on.

Don’t forget a change of clothes and items to refresh after the flight. Pack extra undergarments and socks, a pack-able and easy outfit (I usually go for a dress that packs into my carry-on easily), and body wipes to refresh since a shower might not be an option right away. Make sure that you have a toothbrush and toothpaste handy.

Happy traveling!
